Our Majestic Journey on the AmaMagna
At Travel There and Back, Michael and I truly believe the most exquisite travel experiences are those that seamlessly blend luxury, discovery, and unparalleled comfort. That's precisely what a river cruise offers, and I'm thrilled to share my recent magnificent voyage, alongside Michael, on the AmaWaterways AmaMagna from Budapest to Vilshofen in March 2024. As the owners and travel designers of Travel There and Back, embarking on this journey ourselves wasn't just a trip; it was an immersive exploration of Europe's heart, a true testament to the 'Taking Dreams and Returning Memories' philosophy we embody for our clients.
Imagine gliding along the Danube, tracing a path through centuries of history, culture, and breathtaking scenery. This journey, a jewel in the crown of European river cruising, offers an intimate perspective on some of the continent's most iconic destinations.
The AmaMagna Difference: A Grand Experience
The AmaMagna isn't just a river cruise ship; it's a floating boutique hotel designed for an expansive and luxurious experience. As one of AmaWaterways' most innovative vessels, she boasts larger staterooms and suites, multiple dining venues (including the delightful Al Fresco Restaurant!), and generous public spaces, ensuring every moment on board feels exceptionally comfortable and sophisticated. Michael and I were particularly impressed by the impeccable service, the gourmet culinary offerings that celebrated regional flavors, and the serene ambiance that made every day a delight. It truly redefines what a river cruise can be, elevating the experience with its spacious design.
Navigating the Locks: An Engineering Marvel
One of the truly unique and fascinating aspects of river cruising on the Danube is the experience of passing through the various locks. These incredible feats of engineering gracefully raise and lower the ship, allowing passage between different water levels. From the deck of the AmaMagna, Michael and I watched in awe as the massive gates opened and closed, the water around us steadily rose or fell, and the ship was gently guided into the next section of the river. It's a surprisingly tranquil and captivating process, offering a quiet moment to appreciate the ingenuity required to make these inland waterways navigable, connecting charming towns and grand cities.

A Tapestry of European Wonders: Discovering the Danube's Gems
Starting in the vibrant heart of Budapest, our journey immediately immersed us in central European charm. I loved how the city truly comes alive after dark, with the illuminated Parliament Building and Chain Bridge creating a magical glow. We enjoyed exploring both the historic Buda side, with its Castle District and panoramic views, and the more bustling Pest side, renowned for its grand boulevards and unique ruin bars.
As the AmaMagna gracefully navigated west, each port of call unveiled new layers of discovery:
Bratislava, Slovakia: This charming capital surprised us with its compact yet delightful Old Town, easily explored on foot. We wandered through its quaint streets, admired the quirky bronze statues, and took in the views from the impressive Bratislava Castle, perched high above the Danube. The blend of communist-era history and vibrant modern culture was fascinating.
Vienna, Austria: The imperial grandeur of Vienna, with its Schönbrunn Palace, the Hofburg (former imperial palace), and its unparalleled classical music heritage, was an undeniable highlight. We indulged in an evening of classical music, a truly unforgettable experience, and made sure to sample some traditional Viennese coffee and Sachertorte in a grand coffee house. Every corner felt steeped in history and elegance.
Melk Abbey, Austria: This magnificent Benedictine monastery, perched majestically above the Danube, was simply breathtaking. Its Baroque architecture, stunning library, and intricate frescoes are a testament to centuries of artistry and faith. The views of the Wachau Valley from the abbey's terraces were absolutely stunning, a perfect backdrop for our cruise.
Passau, Germany: Known as the "City of Three Rivers," where the Danube, Inn, and Ilz converge, Passau provided a picturesque conclusion to the sailing portion of our journey. We explored St. Stephen's Cathedral, home to the largest church organ in the world, and meandered through the narrow cobblestone streets, admiring the colorful merchant houses.
Vilshofen, Germany: A charming Bavarian town, Vilshofen marked the official end of our cruise, but certainly not the end of the memories Michael and I made. This quaint town offered a warm Bavarian welcome, a perfect final taste of German culture before our onward travel.
March offered a unique charm for this itinerary. While the vibrant colors of spring were just beginning to emerge, the fewer crowds allowed for a more intimate exploration of these iconic cities and towns. It's a fantastic time for those who appreciate a serene travel pace and the quiet beauty of a waking landscape.
