Our River Cruise with Jacobs Winery Members

At Travel There and Back, Michael and I are driven by a passion to uncover the world's most authentic and enriching experiences, especially when shared with fellow enthusiasts. As specialists in customized independent travel, particularly in Europe, and as experts in Wine/Culinary Travel, we thrive on crafting unique journeys. That's why, in June 2025, we had the distinct pleasure of hosting a wonderful group of Jacob Williams Winery wine club members and their guests on AmaWaterways' enchanting "Taste of Bordeaux" river cruise on a celebration of Bordeaux France.

This extraordinary voyage through the heart of France's legendary wine region perfectly embodied our philosophy of "Taking Dreams and Returning Memories." It was a journey designed for wine lovers and culinary adventurers, offering a luxurious and culturally rich travel experience.

Sailing Through Wine Country on AmaWaterways

The "Taste of Bordeaux" itinerary is a carefully curated exploration of the Garonne and Dordogne rivers, taking you to the very source of some of the world's most celebrated wines. AmaWaterways, known for its exceptional service, elegant ships, and immersive shore excursions, provided the perfect setting for this wine-focused adventure. Our AmaWaterways ship offered all the amenities and comforts our group could desire, from elegant staterooms to gourmet dining.

Here are some highlights of the journey we shared with our Jacobs Winery group:

  • Bordeaux: We began and ended our cruise in the breathtaking city of Bordeaux, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the undisputed capital of the wine world. Michael and I loved exploring its stunning architecture, indulging in its culinary delights, and guiding our group through highlights like the impressive Cité du Vin.

  • Saint-Émilion: This charming medieval town, perched atop rolling vineyards, was a beloved stop for our wine club members. We explored its monolithic church, ventured into its fascinating catacombs, and, of course, enjoyed a Grand Cru Classé wine tasting at a local château – a truly quintessential Bordeaux experience.

  • Médoc: We journeyed through the illustrious Médoc region, home to some of the most prestigious wine estates in the world. Our group particularly enjoyed the visits to renowned châteaux, learning about the intricacies of the winemaking process from local experts, and savoring the bold flavors of Grand Cru wines directly from their source.

  • Libourne & Blaye: These picturesque towns offered a delightful glimpse into the rich history and authentic culture of the region. We explored lively markets brimming with local produce, visited historic citadels, and enjoyed the region's charming riverside atmosphere.

  • Onboard & Offboard Experiences: While the cruise itself didn't feature Jacobs Winery wines onboard, the AmaWaterways program offered fantastic opportunities for wine education and tasting from the Bordeaux region. We also facilitated special moments for our Jacobs Winery group, fostering camaraderie and shared discovery throughout the journey.

More than Just Wine: A Journey Through History and Culture

While the wine was undoubtedly a central theme, the "Taste of Bordeaux" cruise offered a rich tapestry of experiences for our group:

  • Historic Sites: We explored ancient Roman ruins, charming medieval towns, and magnificent châteaux, immersing ourselves in the region's fascinating history.

  • Culinary Delights: From fresh oysters in local markets to decadent pastries and classic French dishes, we savored the diverse and delectable flavors of Bordeaux, a region renowned for its gastronomy.

  • Active Exploration: AmaWaterways' inclusion of bikes on board allowed our group to enjoy optional active excursions, cycling through vineyards and exploring charming villages at their own pace.
